The 5W’s of intention
We live in a day and age where everyone wants to become SOMETHING, making a meaningful impact that will leave their names printed on the shores of history. Honestly, nothing is wrong with wanting to leave a legacy; the Bible actually calls you a good man: “A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children’s children…” Proverbs 13:22.
My belief is that we must first come into the identity of the WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, and WHY. All of these come back to the intention of leaving a lasting impact.
Something I had to learn recently was the power of intention and my time. The time we are given is valuable, and as the aphorism goes, “Time waits for no man.” Therefore, who is the Who behind my intention?
Who am I called to?
Knowing this is critical to one’s growth. You’re called to a particular people and only to them.
Then we need to know the What.
What are we called to do? Knowing the people is one thing, but everyone is NOT the same and may require uniquely packaged items. However, from you, there is a common denominator that they are collectively meant to receive.
Then and only then will aspects of your purpose be revealed. As you slowly work within the WHO and WHAT, you will see the full imagery.
Then, the When. When do I need to start this? Many of us have moved past the question of when, and we just need to start NOW.
The truth is, many of us are BEHIND TIME, but no time is better than the present. The now time, we can accomplish a lot more if we would just start now and stop telling ourselves that we aren’t good enough or are not at the right place.
Then for others, ask yourself and execute the time frame with no fear or doubt about others’ opinions or if you fail.
Next, Where. Where am I now, and what or who do I need to connect with to get to where I need to be?
The Where comes after we’ve made some progress within the Who and the What. Elevation comes from God, and He helps those who help themselves. Therefore, if I’ve been working with the little I am given, then without a shadow of a doubt, I will be given much to rule over, and with ruling comes a shift in my Where. I won’t be able to fully function and take up space if I am chained to my current place.
Oftentimes, as we work within our purpose (the Who and What), we are triggered, uncomfortable, and disturbed by our current location and yearn for a NEW PLACE where we can grow, cultivate, and move at a greater pace.
So ask yourself, Where am I, and where do I need to go? Or have I done enough in my current location?
Last but not least, when you’ve known all of this, ask yourself the million-dollar question: WHY AM I DOING THIS?
Your why could be, but should never be, proving your enemies wrong or someone having a dream of you accomplishing this.
The Why should be what defines you and what drives you to do what you do. When you know your Why, others’ opinions or whether you will succeed won’t avert you from your unyielding destiny.
Your Why should be you!
Why are you a Special Educator? I am a special educator because I believe that with enough compassion and the interest of parents and teachers, our students can accomplish great things. I did not choose special education; it chose me, handpicked me from the rest, and gave me passion, sparked interest, and a momentum to say, I do not fear changes.
When you know the Why, even if you lack words, opinions or failure won’t derail you from accomplishments.
